For the love of patience

“Patience, grasshopper," said Maia. "Good things come to those who wait."
"I always thought that was 'Good things come to those who do the wave,'" said Simon. "No wonder I've been so confused all my life.”
― Cassandra Clare, City of Glass

LOL! Well I can wait a long time to get what I want. I am the kind of person that would much rather do without than settle for second best. Now how does that fare in a world looking for immediate gratification?

If what you want is a really decadent piece of Devil’s food cake with dark chocolate ganache and instead you have a low fat chocolate yogurt, that is what I call settling. I would rather go without in such a case as I would get no satisfaction with the yogurt. In my life this applies to many many things: food, furniture, paintings, etc. My sister-in-law, Martine speaks about something she calls in french, “L’attente amoureuse” or loving patience loosely translated. What she means by this is the value one gets by being patient and cultivating the desire or the love, so that when you obtain the object of your desire you appreciate it that much more.

There are many elements of my life that I have had or chosen to wait for. I encourage you to try it on for size. You might find that your desire for external gratification will decrease as your appreciation for what you have becomes greater. In every case I can say it is well worth doing the wave for.

Ciao!
