Preventable Misfortune...

The other morning I witnessed an accident affecting two vehicles and a city bus. A completely preventable accident where all parties made wrong decisions and moves. The car in front of me was positioned at the stop, signaling an intent to make a left turn. It was positioned so as to block the intersection enough to make it an inconvenient left turn for a city bus. Car #1's driver was taking a long time to make their left turn, so the bus driver who spends all his days in traffic and knew he could execute his turn, decided not to wait and went ahead. At the same moment the bus started to turn, another vehicle behind the bus, decided he was going to pass the bus full of people heading off to start their day. What happened? Calamity. The bus collided with car #2 while turning, scraping the whole side of the car as it pushed it sideways into the vehicle in front of me. The bus was initially unaware of the collision (they seem to be built like tanks) and persued his turn effecting serious damage to Car #2.

What could they do? Well, first the bus could have waited, the car behind the bus who was ultimately responsible for the wreckage all around could have taken a moment to actually asses the situation, not to mention wait his turn as he did not have priority in any way, shape or form. Also the car ahead of me was wrongly positioned in the intersection for a timid a driver who also had a hand to play in the events that followed. Each person behind the wheel could have made a different decision but each one was motivated by their own desire and blinded by their inability to consider others around them. Ultimately Car #1 had priority.

It is (unfortunately) a common occurrence to witness behaviors such as these, that stem from an obtuse view of the world. I have observed that the larger the city, the greater the occurrence. I suspect that is because in a large city people are too busy to get to know their neighbors and the people in their neighborhood. Mr Rogers would be heartbroken! I am also speaking here of choosing to bend rules, or deciding they do not apply to us. Whether it be while driving or just general conduct. We all can recall watching someone choosing to act in a way that is selfish and self serving, having decided in advance that their needs are more important than those around them, or more important than respecting rules or laws even. After all those laws are for other people, aren't they? Sometimes I see driving behavior that is just reckless. How do we get there? How do we allow ourselves to care so little about the people in the world around us that we would risk their lives for our own perceived convenience? When misfortune calls upon us and we must adjust our lives in consequence (illness, job loss, death of a loved one, etc.) that is a challenge for any of us to overcome. When we bring preventable misfortune onto ourselves (and others) that is just careless and dissapointing.

Wayne Dyer says, "Happiness is an attitude."  Today I invite you to put a little more consideration into your world. Every little bit sows a good seed.

Phase one - check!

We spent the weekend in Montreal for studio session #1 of our original material. Yes it is kinda funny that we have no snippets of our musical creations yet but they are coming.

It was amazing. Firstly if you can, you must allow yourself to discover the expert team of people at Piccolo studios in Montreal. We had the expert ears of brothers Dominique and Pierre Messier. They heard everything and were tuned into every nuance. Changing and adjusting microphones and set-ups to capture just the right sound. Plus efficiency like I have never seen. The rough mixes are already in. Phase 2 already scheduled. The other aspect of the experience for me which was very appreciated was the delicacy with which any comment was made. Never was a phrase uttered that would make anyone feel out of place. Always the approach was to make us feel our best to perform our best. This clearly comes from people who have a profound experience in their art and in dealing with artists. I give thanks!

Stay tuned for more...   :)

Projects and more projects

It is so stimulating to have so many projects. In the wake of Marc's first conference, we picked ourselves up and headed into our recording project. For the last 18 months we have been writing music together and now it is time to capture some of our efforts to share with the world. It is funny that so far on our discrete site (I say discrete as this site is not publicised in any way so if you are reading this you either a: know us or b: came looking for us) we have no examples of what we do. For musicians that is quite something. Let us assure you that we just wanted to take the time to make things happen. It had to feel right for us and now it does. To me it feels like we are out in the ocean on our surfboard, watching the wave take shape and getting ready for the ride. I can feel the energy gathering. There is an excitement to it.

Stay tuned over the next few months as we will be posting samples and would love to hear from all of you out there. Wherever you are...

And now presenting...

Yup! Another project launched. I haven't written because I was deep up to my ears with our conference project. You see Marc presented his first conference based on his journey. And lucky for him I was there to help him (a lot!) along the way. At one point he said I was like his René (Angelil). That was funny. Certainly it was such a beautiful project and many told us they were inspired by his story. One guy even said, "I'm going home to practice now."

It is important to share our stories. Marc is a regular guy, form a regular family of regular means and yet his life is filled with extra-ordinary twists, turns and events. It is very inspiring. So to all who helped shape the journey a sincere thank you, and to all who wish to come along for the ride, write us a note. ;)

The calm before the storm?

So now that I am well over my writers block I am wondering, "Is this the calm before the storm?" I have written 5 new tunes in the last 30 days and always have ideas for more (but not always time to write them. What is this obsession with projects?) I have this incredible feeling that I had better hold on to my hat. Marc and I are planning to do an initial recording of our material over the next few months. A voice keeps telling me to do more rather than less. "Be prepared for what is on its way."

I am the kind of person that always manages to weather a storm because I plan and I prepare. I much prefer to put thought into something before hand rather than have to backtrack later.  Marc is always impressed by this. (Good thing I say! :) So I sit at my computer everyday going through the checklist of steps along the way. I look at where we are going, what we need to do and what we invite into our lives.

This being said stay tuned and keep checking with us because audio tracks will be avaialble soon and we'll want to hear from you.

Writer's Block

I think I am experiencing writer's block. It's not that I don't have anything to write about but more like there are so many thoughts and ideas going around in my head like some kind of cerebral tornado that I can't see where to go until it stops and the dust settles.

Sometimes I paint, because painting frees me from my thoughts. I have often found that a manual task is very liberating: gardening, cooking, doing dishes. Being in execution mode frees my mind. I go to a place where I let the thoughts come back to me and listen to my mind. Quiet has to come first.

Maybe my writers block is getting better now. Apparently literary venting is working too. Some days I wish I had made different choices in life because some things would be easier in my present day situation. I don't believe in regretting what we can not change. There is no point. There is not much point in feeling guilty either. So if there is something to learn from all this, my mind is calmer and I am listening.

Happy listening to you too!

Ciao,

If I were the mother of invention...

A few weeks ago the teacher at school asked, “What three inventions that exist today do you wish you had invented?” You can imagine what type of conversation this sparked in the classroom and subsequently in the neighboring homes at dinner time. So I started to think about this myself. In a world so full of technology choices seem endless. Here is what I chose.

Written words. I love the precision and vastness of language. I love what it allows us to express and convey. Communication is essential in society and expression of our thoughts, for me, even more-so. I think the written word allows us to connect within and that is a primordial step in connecting with others.

My MacBook. I can put a record of my life in there. In this relatively small box I have my writing, photos, movies, letters, music I listen to and music I write, thoughts, correspondence, and on and on. I built my website with it. When Marc is far away I speak to him with my computer, write songs with him even. I also use my computer to manipulate images which become works of visual art. What a great invention!

Last, but certainly not least, would have to be an instrument. Oh but which one to choose? I love so many! The piano offers such a colorful range of possibilities. The drums solicit a connection with rhythm and our own heartbeat. A guitar, and there alone the diversity is astounding!, can be soothing or exciting, even raw. To me a cello is so rich, full of tone and full of elegance. But certainly it is obvious to me the instrument whose sound stirs me most is the bass, particularly the upright bass. I love the feel of its vibration and my life is filled with a great joy when I can meld my voice with the rich dark tone that I adore.

For the record, my daughter picked in order: the book, the bed and venetian blinds. What a girl! Happy inventing :)

Challenges? What challenges? Check out my last painting...

There are so many times in life when I feel I know where I am headed. Invariably these moments are interspersed with challenges that make me stop and take notice of what is going on in the present moment. Sometimes these challenges are built up and have a longer lasting effect. That is when I know there is something for me to learn.

I had one of these moments recently. It really caught me by surprise and I wasn’t too sure where it came from or how to deal with it. Unfortunately, even though weeks have passed I am still as confused and lost. I guess I am just inviting an answer, a solution or a revelation to help me move beyond this challenge.

So while my mind and my heart have been preoccupied I have been painting (yes I paint too!) and that brings me comfort.

May you find what comforts you no matter the challenges you encounter.

Action makes the world go round.

I remember my mom would often say, “If you’re going to dream, dream big.” She would do this with the utmost conviction and a smile upon her face. This was a good thing for a kid to hear. Looking at the world as possibilities. Seeing ways of accomplishing things. Daring to dream beyond our current situation. Then came putting those big dreams into action.

Today kids are all about big dreams. Every student who walks into my classroom when I am teaching, has big dreams. They can taste the allure of fame and fortune. Some of them tell me they simply want to be on TV or be famous not mentioning any particular talent they wish to cultivate to achieve these big dreams. The shortcoming is staying connected to how do we make that happen. Every successful athlete, musician, artist or entrepreneur has arrived at their goal with inspiration fueling their perspiration (and by this I mean work).

In my understanding, life with purpose has a road map. Going to your goal and working backward to see the steps you need to take to get there is one way I look at things. Detours are part of the process and welcoming the unexpected allows us to be open to discovery. Sometimes it is the expectation attached to our goal that prevents us from enjoying the journey and that is a shame because life is also about the journey.

In our house we have learned the value of earning our accomplishments big and small. Today on my journey to accomplish my dream of the day, I was in action about what I wanted to accomplish. I went to it. Worked tirelessly and felt the gratification of a job well done when I had achieved my goal. All through the process there was the vision of achievement, there was the commitment to what needed to be done and there was the pride that comes with earnest work ethics.

So today’s wish is for you to dream big and go to it!

What’s in a word?

Sometimes I think about what the world would be like if we only had a certain amount of words to say in a lifetime. Imagine, a verbal quota that once you had reached it you could no longer speak. How would that change what you choose to say or who you choose to say it to? What if unkind words cost you more? (Because they do anyhow...) Maybe a selfless expression of kindness would give you a bonus. (Because they do) Certainly we would learn to choose our words carefully.

When I was young, I strongly disliked being misquoted or misunderstood. Ever since I became increasingly aware of what I was saying and how I was saying it. As a singer it became imperative to sing from the perspective of awareness. It is our responsibility to understand what we choose to put out there and what each song really means. It is as true for any person going through life.

Now as a writer, all those years of pondering over words matter even more. I write about what I know and live. That is true. However I also write about what I want to focus on and consider what I want my audience to take away when I am done. I try to live by this principle that if I was limited in how many words I could say, what would I choose to talk about? What would I say? How would I say it? There is a lot in a word and kindness is as effective, if not more than criticism. Think carefully, listen to your heart and the words you speak will serve you well no matter the context.

And it all begins again ...

Happy New Year to all.

Over the last few days I had a lot of opportunity to reflect about what that phrase can mean. Happiness is a big part of our lives. Furthermore a big part of the happiness that we experience from day to day comes from recognizing all the large and small moments we have to be happy. No matter where we find ourselves and what we are doing, happiness is in the choosing.

Sometimes the difference between being happy or not stems from our ability to allow ourselves to be happy. One of my favorite pieces of sung music is a poem interpreted by Kurt Elling (as things stand today he is my favorite singer www.kurtelling.com ) called “The Waking”. In it there is a line that says, “The shaking keeps me steady.” I remember spending a great deal of time pondering the meaning of those words. Irony? No, truth. Just as the Buddhists say all suffering is evolution, there is truth that all challenges bring with them occasion for growth and expansion. None of us have perfect lives. It is the lemonade we make with life’s lemons that allow us to choose to be happy no matter where we are and what is happening around us.

So then let me rephrase my wish to you. May you find happiness every day of this new year.

Bianca

Thank you. Thank you very much!

Sometimes the thing I like the most about doing manual tasks is that my mind is free to ponder.

Such was the case on Monday when I was cleaning up my kitchen from the remnants of our Sunday dinner. As I was washing up dishes and pots I was reflecting about how lucky we are. I had a kitchen to clean up because I had eaten a nice meal. I had dishes to wash because I have friends and family to share it with. I have a home to welcome them in that is safe and warm.

Giving thanks is something that is a daily ritual for me. So many things are part of our daily blessings that it seems to overlook them is to overlook the treasures that make life worthwhile. I can even be thankful for a disagreeable child as it means that child is in my life offering me an opportunity to learn. (Let the lessons be quick and painless is my only request!)

In this moment I am grateful for those blessings. In many parts of the world, of the country even, there are so many who suffer from hunger, cold and loneliness. I do not have the courage to complain about anything when I reflect upon that truth. There may be song in there somewhere... stay tuned.

Grazie & ciao and until next Wednesday!

Bianca Basso - In the beginning

Marc & I have been writing songs together for more than a year now. It has been such a wonderful journey.

I write a lot of songs in the car  with my iPhone recorder (on napkins with mini-putt pencils on occasion) but over the last few months we wrote our latest tunes on Skype. You see we are often in different places and rely on technology to stay in touch.

Marc, for those who have followed his impressive career, has been writing for a very long time. He has written hits for numerous artists and has a broad scope. In the coming weeks you will be able to read more about him and discover what a diversified artist he is. For now check out his bio in About Us.

Now that we are in the same place (for a while), we will be playing our music to share it with the world. Maybe a small part of the world today but we have no boundaries and welcome wherever life takes us.

This is the first blog entry. Check with us every Wednesday morning to see what we are up to.

Ciao!
